The Marine Aquarium Project Indonesia (MAPI) was initiated by Yayasan LINI, an Indonesian NGO that has been working on this issue for over a decade.

The fishery has been providing significant livelihoods for thousands of coastal communities across Indonesia with the target markets being the overseas and domestic markets, which continue to grow. Despite its importance in terms of business and conservation, the data and information for this industry have been lacking, and not accessible in one place. It is for these reasons that LINI is creating the MAPI online platform, which tries to connect the links in the supply chains in order to develop and support legal and responsible practices in the marine aquarium fishery.

LINI has also developed Best Practices for collecting and post-harvest of marine aquarium fish, and offers training in low-tech reef fish aquaculture at its Aquaculture Training Centre (LATC) in North Bali. With the MAPI, LINI intends to help people along the supply chains, from fishers to exporters, to apply environmentally friendly and responsible fishing practices, promote their products, and find markets that support their efforts.
